Fellows

The primary function of the Institute is to encourage and support collaborative research. Research groups often generate a dynamic give-and-take between scholars.

A research group usually has eight participants, all leading specialists in their respective fields. Each group is permitted an additional two visiting scholars who may join the group for up to two months. The team is customarily in residence for six or twelve months, and on occasions for three months.

The Academic Committee of the IAS selects four to five research groups each year, amounting to approximately 40 fellowships annually. Research topics are not predetermined by the Institute. Topics are chosen from among a broad range of fields in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

The Institute provides office space, a lecture hall, library access, audiovisual equipment, and a computer and communications network. The administrative staff at the Institute provides researchers with an office and technical support. The Institute's dining room serves lunch to fellows and visitors. Discussions over lunch, strolls on campus and field expeditions, along with the exciting, collaborative academic pursuits, all contribute to a dynamic and pleasurable experience during the time spent at the Institute.
