Israel Bartal is the Avraham Harman Professor of Modern Jewish History and the former Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research interests include Jewish Orthodoxy, Eastern European Jewish history in the modern period, the Haskala movement, the pre-Zionist Jewish community in Palestine and the emergence of modern Jewish nationalism. Israel is one of the founders of Cathedra, a leading scholarly journal on the history of the Land of Israel. He has edited, with J. Dekel-Chen, D. Gaunt and N. M. Meir, Anti-Jewish Violence: Rethinking the Pogrom in East European History, Bloomington: Indiana University Press (2011), and is the author of The Jews of Eastern Europe, 1772-1881, Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press (2011) (Chaya Naor, Translator).
