Rachel Manekin

Rachel Manekin is Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her current research interests include the legal treatment of the Jews in Galicia between the years 1772-1867 and its effect on their religious, social, and political development. Her book, Religion, Politics and the Constitutional Monarchy: The Struggle Over the Control of the Jewish Communities in Galicia 1848-1883, is forthcoming (Zalman Shazar Center for Jewish History). Her most recent publications include “Hasidism and the Habsburg Empire: 1788-1867,” Jewish History (2013) and “On Rabbinical Sermons and the ‘Bogeyman of Deism’: The Case of R. Ezekiel Landau,”  Zion 78 (2013).
